After a few weeks with the Polyglots team, I want to look back at how my first steps went.
Reading the handbook
The Translator Handbook felt like a lot at first. There are rules for style, a glossary, and guidelines to keep everything consistent. Reading it made me realize that translating WordPress is not just changing words from English to Spanish.
My first contribution
My first contributions were translations into Spanish (Costa Rica) on translate.wordpress.org, starting with projects like the Forums and Gutenberg. Each translation I submit stays as a suggestion until an editor reviews it. My goal for this term is to reach 300 contributions.
How the team works
The team works in a very open way. Most of the communication happens on Slack, people are in different countries and time zones, and everything is documented so anyone can join and follow along. What surprised me most is that every translation is reviewed before it is approved, which shows how much care goes into quality.
A question I still have
One thing I would like to ask my mentor is how I can get feedback on suggestions that are not approved, so I can learn from them and improve my next translations.
