Creating my personal website

As part of the onboarding for WP Credits, I had to create my own personal website. This is the site you are reading right now, so I wanted to share how it went.

Why I chose WordPress.com

I went with WordPress.com because I wanted to focus on the content and not on setting up or maintaining a server. It let me get a site online quickly, connect my own domain, and start writing right away. For a student project, that felt like the simplest choice.

What was challenging

The hardest part at the beginning was understanding where to change things. My theme came with example text on the homepage, and it took me a moment to realize that it was not a normal page but part of a template. I also had to figure out why comments were not showing on some pages and remember that my site was private until I clicked “Launch site”.

What I learned

The biggest thing I learned is the difference between pages and templates. Pages hold the content, like “About me” or “Contact”, while templates control how the site looks and what appears on every page, like the header and the footer. Once that clicked, editing the site became much easier.

It is still a work in progress, but I am happy with how it is going, and I am looking forward to starting my contributions with the Polyglots team.
