Reflection: Choosing my team and project

Before starting the real work in WP Credits, I had to choose a WordPress team and define my contribution project. Here is what I chose and why.

The team I joined

I joined the Polyglots team, which translates WordPress into other languages. What drew me to it is that translation has a direct impact: millions of people use WordPress, and many of them can only use it comfortably in their own language. As a Spanish speaker from Costa Rica, I liked the idea of helping people in my region use WordPress more easily.

It also connects with skills I already have. I speak Spanish and English, and as a developer I understand the kind of text that appears in software, like buttons, menus and messages, which makes it easier to translate them in a way that makes sense to users.

My contribution project

My project is to translate WordPress projects into Spanish (Costa Rica) on translate.wordpress.org, starting with projects like the Forums and Gutenberg. My goal is to reach 300 translation contributions during the program, following the Translator Handbook, the style guide and the glossary.

What I hope to learn

By the end of the program, I hope to have translations approved by the team, to understand how the review process works, and to learn how a large open source community organizes its work. I also want to get more comfortable communicating in English with people from all over the world.
